Heroes’ Square: Statues and memorials tell the history of the Hungarian nation. At the base of the central column are the Seven Chieftains that lead the Magyar people to what is now Hungary. On top column the Archangel Gabriel holds the Hungarian Crown. In front of the central column is a monument to all heroes who fought for the Hungarian nation. Two colonnades form a semi-circle in the background. Statues depicting fourteen national heroes occupy the spaces between columns. Four statues above the colonnades represent (from left to right): Labor & Wealth, War, Peace, and Knowledge & Glory. For a list of the heroes depicted in the colonnades please click the link.

The Hungarian Parliament Building is, quite possibly, the most beautiful structure I have ever seen. Our tour (Globus: Imperial Escape) took a night cruise on the Danube, we had a fantastic evening. Budapest at night is remarkable. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

I really like your travel blogs – I got ‘gripped’ and read a few of them. Living in the UK, and born in a city with an impressive Norman cathedral, I relate to what you write about – I love them, too, and they were undeniably at the heart of the great European cities.
I’ve toured a lot of continental Europe in my time, but Budapest always stands out as one of my favourite places. I was there in a summer, over a decade ago, so lovely to see some snowy pictures for a change of perspective! I’m not sure if you had the time (or the inclination in the winter!) to experience their public baths/spas – that was another memorable experience of ‘faded glory’ as we visited a huge one built in the 1930s (from memory). It was certainly faded by today’s standards, but would have been very glamorous in its time. Also, the outdoor swimming pool was surprisingly deep!!!

Thank you for reading and commenting. Unfortunately, time prevented us from visiting the bath/spas. We were limited to a day and a half in Budapest. We hope to return and spend more time there. However, there are many other European destinations we hope to visit. Our schedules allow a trip to Europe every one to three years and the list of places we want to visit is long. Your cities are masterpieces.
